The University of Jos community has been thrown into mourning following the killing of a 400-level student of the Department of English by suspected hoodlums.
The victim, Ruth Yakadi, of Anaguta tribe, Plateau State, was said to have been killed after being raped by her assailants.
A viral video seen by PUNCH Metro showed Yakadi lying near a canal with blood all over her body.
Eyewitnesses near the scene of the incident, which occurred at Farin-Gada community, said the corpse was discovered in the early hours of Sunday.
The discovery of the corpse was said to have angered some residents, who staged a protest, as some hoodlums took advantage of the situation to attack traders and other passersby. When contacted, the Head, Department of English, UNIJOS, Prof. Jeff Doki, said the deceased was waiting for mobilisation by the National Youth Service Corps after her project. He said, “I have lost three students since I became HOD in 2021; two males in July and September 2022 during the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
“Information reaching me indicates that the girl who was killed last night (Saturday) at Farin Gada is a spill-over student of our department. “She was supervised by Dr Douglas Kaze and had issues with her long essay. Perhaps, she was done with the project perhaps she was not. “Information available shows the girl was raped and killed thereafter. As things stand now, we are wondering if they are rapists or assassins.”
The Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications of the University of Jos, Abdullahi Abdullahi, did not take his calls when contacted on the incident. A text message sent to his phone was also not replied to as of the time of filing this report.
The spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident.
He said, “You even have information about it more than me. The long and short of it is that we are aware of the incident. Investigation is on and when we’re done, we will get back to you.”
