Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to revive the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which has been non-functional since 2011.
In a meeting with traditional rulers from across the state, Makinde expressed the need to resolve all issues and restore the Council to its official capacity.
The Governor’s administration has been involving the traditional institution in various activities and policies, but the Council itself has been inactive.
Makinde’s deputy, Bayo Lawal, stated that the government had sought recommendations and suggestions from Council members, which have been received from all geopolitical zones of the state. The government intends to treat the suggestions with seriousness and confidentiality and make necessary amendments to the Chiefs law of Oyo State.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Olusegun Olayiwola, urged the traditional rulers to work together to reconstitute the Council, as their collaboration is crucial in addressing criminal activities such as land grabbing and kidnapping.
The meeting was attended by the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, the Head of Service, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, as well as traditional rulers from all zones of the state.
