An Islamic cleric, Sheikh AbdulWaheed AbdulHammeed, has called on Muslims to adhere to the rules and regulations guiding the sharing of inheritance in Islam to avoid God’s wrath.
AbdulHammeed made the call in Ibadan on Saturday as the guest speaker at the 9th Annual Ramadan Lecture of the Criterion, an association of Muslim Women in Business and Professions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the lecture is entitled “Accessing and Implementing Islamic Jurisprudence on Inheritance in Contemporary Nigeria: Prospects, Challenges and Mitigation”.
The guest speaker said it was improper for Muslims to shun Islamic injunctions on the distribution of inheritance while adopting some other ways.
According to the cleric, Islamic rules of inheritance sharing promote equity, fairness and unity among family members and the nation in general.
“The proper way of sharing inheritance is to do it the way it is prescribed in the Quran by God and not you doing it the way you please,” he said.
Earlier, the Ameerah of Criterion, Oyo District, Prof. Morufat Balogun, said the lecture was conceived to serve as an opportunity for Muslims to multiply their good deeds during Ramadan.
This, she said, would also revive their spirituality in worshipping God.
She further said the topic was considered to address the problems surrounding inheritance in the society, noting that death was inevitable.
According to her, the transitioning of assets from the deceased to the survivors has presented a lot of conflicts, financial insecurity, and violence among families.
Balogun attributed the problems with inheritance sharing to inadequate knowledge of the procedures for handling it.
However, she said the lecture would decipher the problems and recommend remedies as instructed in the Quran.
The occasion’s chairman, Dr Bashir Olanrewaju, urged Muslims to make adequate provisions for their hereafter and prepare those to inherit their wealth to prevent legal battles.
Olanrewaju emphasised that Islam had made comprehensive plans on how Muslims should live, including the sharing of inheritance.
She said all faithful must adhere to God’s injunctions to obtain His maximum reward.
NAN reports that the former Oyo State Head of Service, Alhaja Amdalat Agboola, and the Wife of the former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hamdalat Olaniyan, graced the occasion. (NAN)
