ARISE News Anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, Killed in Abuja Robbery

The Nigerian media industry was thrown into mourning on Monday following the tragic death of ARISE News anchor, reporter and producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie.

Sommie, aged 29, was confirmed dead in the early hours of September 29, 2025, after an armed robbery incident at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of ARISE News management, the station described Maduagwu as a vibrant voice who engaged and connected deeply with viewers.

“Somtochukwu was not only a cherished member of the ARISE News family but also a lawyer, a professional and supportive colleague, and a friend to many. Her voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the statement read.

ARISE News expressed its deepest condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends and loved ones, while urging security authorities to ensure a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.

Maduagwu, born on December 26, 1995, joined ARISE News as a young broadcaster and quickly rose to become a respected anchor and producer admired for her brilliance, warmth and dedication.

Her untimely passing has left colleagues, friends and viewers in shock, with tributes pouring in across the media landscape.
