The Executive Director, STAND Foundation, Barr. Olusayo Adeleye has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Senator Elisha Abbo.
The Senator, Mr Abbo who is representing Adamawa North Constituency, Adamawa under People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has faced attacks in the past few days following a CCTV footage which has been circulating online showing the young senator physically assaulting a woman.
Adeleye while reacting to the online video in a press statement on Wednesday described the incident as a ‘display of brute Force and a barbaric action’.
Adeleye said that the conduct of the young senator is a demonstration of utter disregard for women, the law and the hallowed Chambers which he represents, saying that this is a violation of the relevant provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015.
She stated that Abbo who is the youngest Senator in the 9th assembly has proven to be a bad example to the “Not to young to run” mantra and does not have what it takes to live up to the expectations of the position of leadership which he currently occupies.
Adeleye called on the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to order for his immediate arrest and prosecution.
The director also beckoned on Adamawa- North Senatorial Constituency to begin with immediate effect the process of recalling him as the Senator representing their constituency.
Adeleye affirmed that the rights of women are guaranteed by the law, sacrosanct and must not be violated by anyone, no matter his position in the society, hence advocacy against gender-based violence must be given all promotion needed.
“This show of shame by the Senator is a demonstration of gross disregard for women and a violation of relevant provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015.
“Coming from a lawmaker who is supposed to be a respecter of the law and a distinguished ambassador of the hallowed chambers which he represents, this act is utterly distasteful, disgraceful, condemnable and very unbecoming.
“Aboo, at 41 years, is reported to be the youngest Senator in the National Assembly and should be a sterling example for youths in the quest to live up to the ‘Not too young to run’ mantra but his conduct on this occasion is a demonstration that he does not have what it takes to live up to the expectations of the position of leadership which he currently occupies.
