The legal luminary and chieftain of All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Niyi Akintola (SAN) has condemned DSS’ mode of operation in invading the house of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
Akintola while featuring on Fresh FM program, Political Circuit which was anchored by Mayor Isaac Brown said the secret police has created alibi and loopholes for Igboho to win them in court.
Recall that in a bloody raid on Igboho’s Soka residence in Ibadan, Oyo State on July 1, this year, the DSS had arrested and detained 13 of his associates. Two of Igboho’s supporters later identified as Adogan and Alfa were also killed during the raid.
The secret police later presented seven AK-47 rifles allegedly recovered from the house during the raid as well as three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridges and 18 walkie-talkies.
Others were three charm jackets/traditional body armour, two laptops, one Toshiba and one Compaq laptop, Igboho’s passport and those of his aides.
The DSS had said its operatives carried out the raid after an intelligence report confirmed that he was stockpiling arms in the home.
Speaking on the radio program, Akintola who earlier condemned Igboho’s method of fighting for the Yoruba Nation independence chides the secret police over failure to follow law during visit to his residence.
He also said Igboho’s decision to flee and seek asylum is not bad as many Nigerian leaders had sought asylum in the past to escape undue hardship from government of the day.
He said: “Igboho’s seeking asylum is right. There are thousands of applications from Nigerians seeking asylum abroad. There had been no charges filed against Igboho.
“But I see DSS shooting themselves in the foot by invading Sunday Igboho’s house. Going to his house, must be transparent. Going to anybody’s house, you must go with search warrant and it’s responsibility of any security man or maybe I’m in the dark.
“In fact, DSS destroyed their own case because who was there when you said you found weapons in his house? This is something you should have shown to the world but you blocked the CCTV camera. Those things could have been planted, therefore creating an alibi and loopholes for the man. Those lawyers handling the matter knows what to do”, Akintola said.
