Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians planning to protest over the current economic hardship to exercise their rights peacefully and avoid violence or destruction of public property.
Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 Ibadan Week organized by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Makinde acknowledged the public’s right to protest but cautioned against damaging government-owned facilities.
“Protest is everybody’s right. But remember that we used your money to build all the structures and facilities we have put in place in this state, not mine. So, if you want to protest, it must be peaceful,” the governor said.
Makinde commended the CCII and Ibadan leaders for their efforts towards the growth and development of the city. He announced plans to inaugurate a committee on Tuesday to oversee the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport, with ground-breaking expected within six weeks. The governor also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the airport project and the takeover of the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium by the state government.
During the event, the governor’s wife, Mrs. Tamunominini Olufunke Makinde, was awarded the title of “Most Outstanding Wife of Ibadan,” while the state’s Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, was conferred with the “Most Outstanding Friend of Ibadan” award.
CCII President-General, Chief Suleiman Ajewole, described Governor Makinde as a “true son of Ibadanland” and a “promise-keeper,” commending him for the delivery of the new Olubadan Palace within seven months.
