Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has received the comprehensive report from the Committee on the Management and Disbursement of the Bodija Explosion Relief Fund, pledging to review and implement its recommendations promptly. The governor, represented by his deputy, Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, who also chairs the relief fund committee, described the incident as both tragic and preventable. He emphasized the state government’s swift response, which included emergency services and post-explosion support measures.
Governor Makinde highlighted the importance of investigating the root cause of the explosion, urging residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious. He assured victims that the committee’s recommendations would be acted upon swiftly to provide relief and support.

“Following the explosion at Deji Oyelese Close, Bodija, the Oyo State Government immediately intervened to mitigate the damage,” the governor stated. “It was crucial for us to investigate the cause of this unusual incident, especially given the area where it occurred. No one anticipated such significant damage in this high-brow neighborhood. However, we continue to learn from such events, and this underscores the importance of prioritizing security.”
Governor Makinde commended the committee for its dedication, noting that the report’s implementation would be expedited to assist victims without further delay. “On behalf of His Excellency, I assure you that this report will be reviewed promptly, and its recommendations will be implemented. We recognize the urgency and will ensure that all necessary efforts are made to provide relief to the victims,” he said.
The committee’s report, presented by retired Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni on behalf of the chairman, is structured into four volumes. Volume 1 contains the main report, divided into eight chapters detailing the committee’s deliberations and recommendations. Volume 2 outlines the framework for distributing government financial support, as agreed upon by the Dejo Oyelese Vigilance Group (DOVG), Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA), and the Nigerian Society of Engineers. Volume 3 provides a breakdown of funds allocated to affected individuals, while Volume 4 offers a detailed pictorial account of the damages caused by the explosion.
Owoseni expressed gratitude to the governor for entrusting the committee with this critical task, expressing confidence that the report would not only benefit the victims but also serve as a guide for future government interventions.
Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, President of the Bodija Estate Residents Association, elaborated on the committee’s recommendations, which propose support for various categories of victims, including those who lost loved ones, properties, vehicles, and other valuables. He clarified that the relief fund is intended as support rather than compensation, urging victims to appreciate the assistance provided.
“We have proposed support for different categories of victims, with varying amounts based on the extent of their losses,” Bamgbose explained. “Our expectation is that the implementation will be expedited, as we have done our due diligence. We appreciate the government’s swift response and the decision to have the Deputy Governor oversee this process. While this is not compensation, the support will undoubtedly help those affected.”
Bamgbose also commended the state government for its ongoing efforts to address the aftermath of the explosion, including road repairs and other developmental projects. “We are grateful for the government’s actions so far. Development often comes with challenges, but we appreciate the steps taken to support the affected community,” he added.
The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the recommendations are implemented swiftly, providing much-needed relief to the victims of the Bodija explosion.
