Should the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, refused to intervene as he was said to have done on previous occasions, the chairman of Ekiti West Local Government area of Ekiti State, Kareem Agunbiade, may be on his way out of office as the Local Government Legislative Council has commenced impeachment process against him.
Majority Leader of the Legislative Council, Okunola Busayo Idowu, who moved the motion for impeachment of the chairman on Tuesday, accused him of misappropriation of the council fund and working against the interest of Governor Fayemi by being the leader of a group he called G8.
The chairman is said to more than 10 aides while his Vice, Alhaja Motunrayo Adesina officially has none.
The Legislative Council accused Kazeem Agunbiade of diverting N1 million from the council to service his aides.
He was also accused of awarding fake contracts through the office of the director of works and acquiring the local government properties through auction without remitting the money to the council.
One of such properties was said to be a tractor he allegedly placed for sale and later sold to himself.
He was accused of masterminding other council chairmen to remove ALGON chairman against directive of Governor Fayemi
The chairman was also accused of “shortchanging the council of its monthly Federal Allocations by slashing down the original allocated amount.”
“My distinguished colleague, having said all these, as an ambassador of peace in the temple of justice, I, Honourable Okunola Busayo Idowu, the majority leader of the House Ekiti West Local Government hereby move a motion that the honourable house should start the impeachment process of the Chairman of Ekiti West Local Government, Honourable Kareem Agunbiade on this date, 23rd February, 2021 with immediate effect,” the impeachment motion read in part.
