Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished elder statesmen and intellectuals, Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo, who passed away just days short of his 90th birthday.
The death of Olunloyo was mourned by Lanre Ogundipe, former President of the Nigeria and African Union of Journalists, in a heartfelt statement titled “Molete Bridge Is Down.” Ogundipe described the late Olunloyo as a patriotic leader, revered mathematician, and respected traditional titleholder – the Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife.
Dr. Olunloyo’s life was defined by public service and intellectual brilliance. He served as the Governor of Oyo State and held numerous significant positions, including being the first Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic. His contributions to academia, governance, and the sociopolitical landscape of Nigeria were vast and impactful.
Describing their final conversation, Ogundipe recalled a cryptic remark made by the late elder statesman: “Lanre, Molete Bridge would be finally down, when the piano keys no longer run.” This poetic farewell, he said, foretold the monumental loss the country would feel upon Olunloyo’s departure.
“Dr. Olunloyo was not just a man to be mourned, but to be celebrated,” Ogundipe wrote. “His passing marks the end of an era. A towering figure in Nigerian history, his intellect and integrity were rare gems in today’s diminishing pool of merit.”
Olunloyo’s death, he added, signifies the loss of “an entire archive, the repository of the Nigerian State.” A symbol of excellence in politics, education, and leadership, Dr. Olunloyo leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
May his soul rest in peace.
