The Federal Government has commenced the payment of N44,000 in minimum wage arrears to former members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fulfilling a promise made during the recent upward review of corps members’ monthly allowance.
The arrears cover the shortfall from the previous allowance of N33,000 to the newly approved N77,000, and are being paid to corps members who completed their service before the new wage structure came into effect earlier this year.
Reports from social media platform X (formerly Twitter) show a wave of confirmations from ex-corps members who have received the payments in their bank accounts. Many have taken to the platform to express their gratitude and relief, with some describing the payment as a much-needed boost amid current economic challenges.
The adjustment reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to cushion the impact of inflation and cost-of-living increases for young Nigerians transitioning from national service to the workforce.
