Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE’), Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina has warned staff and students of the institution to desist from engaging in harmful office politics and writing of unneccesary petitions describing such acts as capable of constituting nuisance to University administration and being clog in the wheel of progress.
Prof. Fasina who reiterated on his promises at his inuaguaration that staff welfare, promotion and other incentives shall top his priorities as VC, urged staff members to do their work diligently, students to remain studious and avoid distractions.
He issued the warning on Thursday while addressing staff members of the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences during one of his tour of the faculties in order to have a good idea of the challenges in the school.
The VC was accompanied by his Management team which included the DVC academics, Prof. Olusola Ojo, Registrar, Mr. Olatubosun Odusanya, Bursar, Mrs. Bolatito Akande, Librarian, Dr. Busayo, Deputy Registrar in VC’s office, Mr. Mufutau Ibrahim, and Deputy Director, Corporate Services, Mr Adeyinka Ademuyiwa among others
Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Olusola Adeeye, in his welcome address to the VC, urged the Prof. Fasina-led administration to expedite action on the establishment of FUOYE’s College of Medicine, revealing that the groundwork was already laid for the take-off of the College. His words: “You are welcome to one of the two newest faculties in the University. It is no gainsaying that you are part of the success story of this faculty from conception to the level it is now.
” Your contribution during the time of writing the Curriculum, your superintending the staff recruitment Committee and your series of advices during the National Universities’ Commission (NUC) verification of our courses cannot be forgotten.
” The courses available in this faculty now include B.sc Anatomy, B.sc Physiology, B.sc Radiograph and Radioactive Science, Bachelor of Nursing Science, and Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science.
“During your maiden speech in your inuaguaration, you emphasized that establishment of a College of Medicine is one of your top priorities this year. As a reminder, you were the Chairman of the Committee for the establishment of the College of Medicine towards the tail end of the administration of the former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun. It would therefore interest you that the draft of the Curriculum has been submitted to your good office and a copy is with the Director of Academic Planning for further actions.
” The major work on the establishment of a College of Medicine is already completed with the approval by NUC for the commencement of B.sc Anatomy and Physiology programmes. The task is much easier. The two departments are the bedrocks of Medicine at the pre-clinical level. We would therefore appreciate it if your administration would expediate action on it for a quick realization of this laudable dream,” he said.
Responding, Prof. Fasina said the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is special to him as he has a lot of those he could accept as his own people there. He promised to expedite action on the take-off of FUOYE’s College of Medicine, adding that he has already began taking concrete steps in that direction. He also gave other sundry assurances, saying: “This faculty is special to me. My people are here and I will do everything possible to make sure that this faculty stands. I was the chairman of the panel that set up this faculty.
When we were putting up this faculty, I saw many brilliant people who can provide mentorship and sound leadership.
“It is only when you have something that you can give. Your faculty is central to the development of the College of Medicine. Our host community, Oye-Ekiti, are already preparing to have us establish a College of Medicine and they have promised us a wide expanse of land.
“I will support you to give you all that you want. We will bring more experienced academics here who will strengthen the faculty. The
Oye Progressive Union informed me that the have started contributing towards developing our dream College. I want to assure you that our host community love us.
“Fortunately, indigenes of Oye-Ekiti have many qualified medical professionals and they are coming together to give support to us in this endeavour. I am very happy with the quality of academics here especially those selected to head the various departments. I can go to sleep having them around.
“We will advertise for the faculty so that students could come latest by May and we start lectures. Some of our staff members are already involved in consultancy services. We want to partner with you to take FUOYE to higher level. Let us all work together as brothers and sisters. Please shun office politics on campus, shun petitions writing . It doesn’t pay. You will not achieve anything with that. I assure you of my maximum cooperation. I have a son who is also a medical doctor so I am passionate about your faculty.
“We will give awards to best lecturers and best non-academic staff members to motivate them to innovate and imorove. We have put in place 11 Committees to reposition FUOYE. We will introduce activities that would make students render community services, initiate projects that would develop their enterprenurial skills for both commercial and community services purposes. We will motivate our students to develop individual projects that will also make them improve in their chosen fields of endeavour. This is what I personally have engaged in before when I organized students in Agriculture, Economics, Engineering and ICT and the likes at the Ekiti State University when Prof. Aina was VC, to initiate great projects and we achieved quite a lot. I will approve all your requests so that you can take up in the next two weeks,” he concluded.
“Speaking on behalf of the staff, a Professor of the faculty, Prof. Margret Araoye, assured the VC of huge support from the staff and wished him a fruitful, successful and impactful tenure. Her words: ” We are assured that we have a dynamic VC. I want to assure you that we will put in our best. And with all the great minds here, we will achieve our goals in an excellent way.”
