…. says process has been fair, transparent
A rival academic union at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) under the aegies of Congress of Nigerian Universities’ Academics (CONUA) has berated the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AKure zone, for always serving as the clog in the wheel of progress in the institution by unnecessarily antagonising progressive strides of the Prof. Kayode Soremekun led Management.
Convener of CONUA in FUOYE, Comrade Ayodeji Ige, in a press statement,l which he co- signed with the secretary, Dr Omofunmi Olorunwa, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, in his reaction to Monday’s resolution of the ASUU , AKure zone and other non-academic unions in FUOYE, which held that the zone and some non-academic staff of the school have lost confidence in the on-going process of electing a new Vice-chancellor for FUOYE, alleging that the VC was imposing a candidate, declared that ASUU AKure zone and so called non-academic staff were only playing a spoiler’s role and whipping up unnecessary sentiments.
Ige who lauded FUOYE Management for being fair and transparent in the VCship process said his team has been monitoring the process and are satisfied with it. He therefore chided those opposing and condemning the process, saying they are mischief makers not interested in the progress of the institution.
The statement from The, reads in part: ” attention has been drawn to a press statement issued by Akure Zonal ASUU Chairman Prof Oluolu in conjunction with there local associates in the University.
” Though the press statement is self indicting, we decided to respond to a few number of questions on the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.
” It will be recalled that five months ago, the National coordinator of CONUA, Dr Niyi Sumonu mandated us the local branch to monitor the process for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for the University and this we have done and still doing without being for or against the management and any interest group.
” Our observation so far is that the process has been fair and our representatives from the congregation, senate members of council have not come back to inform us that the process has been skewed in favour of a candidate. Both CONUA and ASUU participated at the election of members of ASUU and Non Academic staff representing both Unions at the level of the council. It will amount to raising of a vote of no confidence on the representatives by crying wolf where there is none.
” The selection process we have monitored so far is in compliance with the standard as stated in NUC guidelines as the present petitions are from mischief makers who are not interested in the progress of the New University. The template they went to borrow from the University of Ibadan cannot work here in FUOYE. We believe in the process so far and we urge the governing authorities to continue with the process that will lead to the emergence of a new Vice- Chancellor.
” Though it is not strange anymore that ASUU delights in indulging in pull him down syndrome in order to seek cheap relevance, they do this particularly with those that have served meritoriously like Prof. Kayode Soremekun and who will never bowed to alternative government like ASUU. “As he said earlier ASUU did not appoint me”.
We therefore declare that we have Co much confidence in the process and are ready to work with a new VC that would emerged from this credible process,” CONUA said.
