Traders in the Bola Ige International Market, also known as Gbagi market, in Ibadan, Oyo State, have raised concerns over the deteriorating conditions of the market and the disregard for the state government’s master plan. The traders, under the group “Concerned Gbagi Traders,” expressed their frustration with what they described as the selfish actions of government aides and consultants who prioritize revenue generation over the welfare of the traders and customers.
According to one of the traders, Mr. Benjamin Aderogba, the market has been turned into a chaotic environment, with illegal stalls and kiosks scattered everywhere. He emphasized that a supposed international market should not be subjected to such abuse and neglect by government officials. Aderogba also highlighted the compromised state of the Fire Service point, which has been taken over by shops, posing a danger to the market and its occupants.
In addition to the poor state of the market, the traders are also burdened with exorbitant rents. Aboriginal traders who have been in the market for decades are being asked to pay N4 million annually, while counter owners are required to pay N600,000 annually. This is perceived as unreasonable, especially considering the current economic crisis in the country.
Furthermore, officials of the Oyo State Road Management Agency (OYRTMA) have been towing away vehicles parked along the road near the market, scaring away potential customers and affecting sales. The traders believe that the government’s actions undermine the legacy of the market and other historical facilities in the state.
The traders are calling on the state governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, to intervene and address the issues plaguing the market. They also urge the Ibadan Elders, Elites, and the traditional institution, as well as the State House of Assembly, to step in and ensure that a probe is conducted to address the concerns raised.
It is crucial for the government to prioritize the welfare and livelihoods of traders and customers in such markets. The state government should uphold its master plan and take immediate action to rectify the problems faced by the traders in the Bola Ige International Market. By doing so, the government can ensure a conducive and thriving business environment for the traders and contribute to the economic development of the state.
