Following a viral video of a widow being tied and flogged by members of her community in Umueghu in Amaegbuato autonomous community Nkpa Bende Local Government, Abia state, a human right activist has called on government to intervene.
The assault by the community members followed the report by her late husband’s brother who accused her of being a witch and using the witchcraft to kill her husband.
The activist, Comrade Kehinde Akinyemi JP in his reaction said the assaulted on the widow is barbaric, criminal and against natural justice.
The activist wrote below;
Mediation Conciliation and Human Rights Center condemn the act as barbaric, criminal and against natural justice. It’s also a violation of the woman and her children’s fundamental rights.
We therefore, call on the Inspector General of Police to order the arrest, investigation and immediate prosecution of the late husband’s family members who engineered the barbaric act as well as all the people seen in the video flogging the woman.
This is another case of widows abuse in other to take over properties of the late husband.
The State Governor should intervene by rehabilitating the woman and her children while the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Women Affairs should ensure Justice for the woman and her children by recovering all the properties of the late husband from the family back to the woman and her children.
The public humiliation and flogging of the widow couple with unfounded allegation levied against the widow victim is repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.
