Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) is recognizing the importance of International Women’s Day (IWD) in promoting gender equality and inclusion in agriculture. With this year’s theme being #InspireInclusion, SAA is highlighting the significant contributions women are making in the agriculture sector.
SAA, whose mission is to support Africa in building sustainable and resilient food systems, acknowledges that women play a crucial role in ensuring food security and rural development. Despite their dedication and innovation in agriculture, their efforts are often overlooked.
To address this, SAA incorporates inclusivity into its core agricultural extension approaches: Regenerative Agriculture (RA), Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture (NSA), and Market-Oriented Agriculture (MOA). These approaches actively break down barriers that hinder women’s access to resources, training, and leadership opportunities.
SAA’s gender mainstreaming training goes beyond teaching agricultural techniques. It equips women with the knowledge and skills needed for successful business development, marketing, and entrepreneurship. The organization also promotes inclusivity within its own ranks, ensuring equal opportunities for women in leadership roles and fostering a culture that celebrates diversity.
Speaking in Abuja on the occasion of IWD, SAA’s Country Director, Dr Godwin Atser, emphasized the potential of unleashing women’s brilliance, dedication, and innovation in agriculture. He called for action to create a future where women are not only included but celebrated as leaders in shaping a sustainable and prosperous food system.
According to Dr Atser, building an inclusive agricultural sector has numerous benefits, including increased productivity and economic empowerment for women, improved food security and nutrition, and a more resilient and innovative agriculture landscape. SAA urges all stakeholders, including governments, development partners, agricultural organizations, and individual farmers, to join them in creating an environment where women can flourish, have their voices heard, and their contributions celebrated.
Together, SAA aims to cultivate a future where agriculture thrives on the strength of its diversity.
