Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela, has described leadership as sacrifice, adding that anyone who wishes to lead and impact positively on the people must be ready to do such assignment sacrificially.
Ojomoyela made the remarks on Monday, while inaugurating the newly appointed officials of the NUJ in the state who were given various assignments tailored towards ensuring impactful leadership by the union in the state.
According to a statement by the Secretary of the state Council, Comrade Kayode Babtuyi, officials who were appointed were designated to work in various Committees which included Ethics And Disciplinary Committee, having Amos Ogunrinde, as Chairman, Babajide Agbeyo, Secretary and Soyemi Olayinka, Toyosi Eleyimin
Gani Salau as members; Sports Committee, having Deji Ogunsakin, as Chairman, Akinkuolue Akinrelure, Secretary and Charles Ademolaju, Banke Fajuyi Deji Egbebi as members; Welfare Committee with Mrs. Bola lawal, as Chairman, Emmanuel Nwosoro, Secretary and Opeyemi Jooda, Benjamin Akinola, Femi Fadaunsi as members; and finally, the Advocacy, Training and Strategy Committee, having Remi Koleoso as Chairman, Niyi Alade, Secretary and Dare Daniels, Joke Ajayi, Mr. Asubiojo as members.
The duo of Yakub Popoola and Kayode Jegede were appointed as members of the Ex-Officio team, while Mr. Wole Balogun was appointed to serve as Special Adviser to the state chairman on Media.
Babtuyi stated in the appointment letters to the designated officials that their appointment were considered and handed out by the Council due to their diligence and experience which were noticed over the time. He added that the Council reposes confidence in them to deliver on their assignments.
While charging the newly appointed officials to serve the Union at the state level sacrificially and ensure their impact is felt, Comrade Ojomoyela assured that his administration was bringing the novel initiative of effecting the appointments because of the need to prepare available and willing members of the NUJ for impactful leadership.
His words: ” I urge you to serve sacrificially. Make your mark. Let diligence and sacrifice be your watchword and deliver in areas you have been assigned to lead. You have the full backing of the Council Executive under my watch. Discharge your duties without fear or favour so that we can jointly take our state Council to higher heights.
” There is a whole lot of work to do and the State chairman with his Executives cannot do the work alone. We are always proud of Oyo NUJ council and that of Ondo State. The development achieved in those states were put in place by leadership provided by people like you and l. Not angels who fell from heaven. If we collectively render sacrificial service to our Union, we will take it to a greater heights.”
The Ekiti State NUJ chairman, also read out the Terms of References to the variuos Committees, thus: “The Ethics and Disciplinary committee is to handle and investigate any report of misconduct against Journalists and advice the union appreciately.
” The committee is also to work with security agencies to check quackery and use of fake stickers by unauthorized persons.
” Sports Committee is to organize keep fix exercise and sporting activities among members of the union. To liaise with sport stakeholders in the state towards promoting sporting activities in the state.
‘ While the Welfare Committee is to organize programmes that would enhance the welfare of members, such as End of the year, recreation etc.
” The committee is to work with the council to ensure improve commitment of members to social programmes of fellow Journalists and raise fund for development of the union.
The Training Committee is to liaise with government and stakeholders to organize training for members. Organize advocacy programmes such as rally, walk against rape etc. The committee is to also advice the union on various issues of concern, ” he said.
Encouraging the officials shortly after their inuaguration, Give Chairman of the Council, Comrade Ronke Samo urged them to put in their best in discharging their duties. She expressed optimism that the officials’ efforts in the coming days, will take the Council to greater heights.
