Makinde Offers Oyo’s Healthcare Template to FG, Launches 2025 Free Medical Mission

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has expressed his administration’s readiness to share its successful primary healthcare delivery model with the Federal Government. This comes as the FG recently announced plans to establish 8,800 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 Omituntun Free Medical Mission held at the Ibadan North-East Local Government Secretariat, Makinde highlighted the state’s achievement in building functional Category 3 PHCs across most of its 351 electoral wards. He emphasized that Oyo’s approach, which has enhanced healthcare accessibility, could be replicated at the national level.

“We began revitalizing our PHCs before the Federal Government’s recent plan. What we’ve done in Oyo State is a working model, and we’re happy to share it,” Makinde stated. “A healthy population is key to fighting poverty and driving economic growth, and we remain committed to improving health outcomes.”

The governor commended health sector stakeholders, including Professor Temitope Alonge, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, Health Commissioner Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, and Chairman of the Hospital Management Board, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, for their contributions to the sector’s transformation.

Makinde also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering results across four core pillars—education, health, security, and economic development. He cited improvements in security, better performance in national exams, and economic growth as evidence of effective governance.

“Our security architecture is yielding results, but we won’t relent until everyone can sleep soundly,” he said. “We’ve also made notable progress in education, and we’re injecting N24 billion monthly into the state’s economy through salaries and pensions, while creating infrastructure for private enterprise.”

The governor stressed that his government’s achievements stem from a forward-looking approach and a refusal to dwell on the failures of past administrations. “Even in 2018, I didn’t focus on what others didn’t do. We campaigned on what we planned to achieve, and the people trusted us,” he said.

He also thanked residents of Ibadan North-East and Oyo State for supporting his administration. “The stability we enjoy today is a result of people doing the right thing in their homes and communities.”

In her remarks, Health Commissioner Dr. Ajetunmobi praised the governor’s dedication to healthcare reform, noting that the Free Medical Mission would operate in clusters across the state. Each cluster will provide three days of comprehensive care and post-operative follow-up.

She also revealed plans to enroll beneficiaries in the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme via the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), ensuring continued care beyond the outreach.

Dr. Fagbemi, Chairman of the State Hospital Management Board, lauded recent medical personnel recruitment, which helped Oyo secure full accreditation for physiotherapy practice after a 30-year hiatus.

Dignitaries at the event included Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal, former Deputy Governor Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi, former Speaker Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima, Chief of Staff Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, and Head of Service Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, among others.
