
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering the youth by creating platforms and opportunities for them to unlock their potential and contribute meaningfully to economic prosperity.
Speaking at the grand finale of the Oyo State Youth Summit 2025, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Governor Makinde emphasised the importance of education, entrepreneurship, and productivity in driving national development. He noted that without these elements, Nigeria’s youth risk being left behind despite their population strength.
“Sometimes, I wonder if young people are just seeking handouts or if they are truly the key to our nation’s prosperity. I believe it’s the latter. You are the potentials we must unlock to move this country forward,” Makinde said.
The governor recounted his own journey into entrepreneurship at age 29 and stressed that job creation should not be left solely to the government or large corporations. “I only worked briefly before starting my own company. We must build a nation of entrepreneurs. Education, exposure, and productivity are non-negotiables,” he said.
Highlighting the role of education in national growth, Makinde pointed to Finland as a model, noting its transformation through investment in education rather than natural resources. He urged young Nigerians to be informed, proactive, and innovative, while assuring them of the government’s continued support.
“We must reduce illiteracy, promote entrepreneurship, and embrace production at all levels. Oyo State will continue to lead the way in providing platforms for youth to thrive,” he said.
Earlier, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss Wasilat Adegoke, praised the Makinde administration for its youth-focused initiatives and policies. She urged young people to take responsibility for their growth and seize opportunities provided by the government.
“Under Governor Makinde, youth empowerment has taken a front seat. From entrepreneurship programmes to skills development, our youths are being equipped to succeed,” she said.
The summit, themed “Unlocking Youth Potential: Addressing Needs, Fulfilling Dreams,” began with a drug abuse awareness walk across five zones of the state and featured plenary sessions, panel discussions, and interactive skill-building forums.
Governor Makinde was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement in Governance Award and presented awards to key individuals, including his Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; SSA on Special Duties, Miss Lolade Ajibola; BOVAS Oil and Gas MD, Dr Victoria Samson; and entertainers Mr Mustapha Iskil (Arojinle) and Mrs Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori.
Dignitaries at the event included top government officials, commissioners, and advisers, reaffirming the state’s unified approach to youth development.
