The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Lawal Faruq, for allegedly setting his former lover, Omolola Hassan, ablaze within a military barracks in Ibadan.
The disturbing incident, which occurred earlier in the week, was reportedly triggered by the collapse of their romantic relationship.
A counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed details of the attack on X (formerly Twitter), said the suspect confessed that he and the victim had taken an oath never to part ways.
“The victim, Omolola Hassan, was doused in petrol and set on fire by the suspect, who became furious over the end of their relationship,” Makama wrote.
Eyewitnesses said military personnel at the barracks quickly intervened, putting out the flames and rushing the badly injured woman to Yawiri Hospital, Akobo, for urgent treatment.
Sources added that Faruq’s action was driven by rage after Hassan decided to end their relationship.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, SP Adewale Osifeso, said investigations had begun.
“Investigation is ongoing,” Osifeso stated in a brief message.
Meanwhile, the victim remains hospitalised as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the brutal attack.
