Motorcycle Rider Arraigned for Assaulting OYRTMA Officers

A motorcycle rider, Adeyemi Samuel, appeared before Magistrate Court 9 in Iyaganku on Friday, facing charges for allegedly assaulting two officers of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).

The incident took place in Apata, where Samuel was accused of physically attacking officers Aderoju Michael and Adedokun Olalekan. According to a statement released on Sunday by OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), Samuel had refused to park his red Boxer motorcycle, with registration number DDA 612 UT, at a designated area and ignored the officers’ instructions.

He was subsequently taken to the OYRTMA Omi Adio Command before being handed over to the Nigerian Police Force at Apata Police Station. The attack reportedly left the officers with severe injuries.

Samuel was charged with three offenses: breach of public peace, resisting arrest, and assaulting officers. Presiding Magistrate Adeola (Mrs) granted him bail, requiring two sureties who must each provide N100,000 and demonstrate stable employment. The case was adjourned to April 23.

Major Adekoya condemned the assault, raising concerns about the rising trend of motorists violating traffic regulations and attacking enforcement officers. He called for better cooperation between the public and OYRTMA personnel, emphasizing their role in ensuring safe and orderly traffic flow in the state.

In a separate development, Adekoya led an enforcement operation in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The team targeted areas such as Iwo Road, Iyana Church, and Ojaba, focusing on removing roadside vendors and traders contributing to traffic congestion and environmental issues.

He urged residents to support the government’s initiatives in maintaining a clean and orderly environment, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in fostering sustainable urban development. The enforcement drive demonstrated the Oyo State Government’s commitment to tackling urban challenges and enhancing road safety.
