The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has urged Nigerians to watch the type of food they eat and body creams they use as some of them are causes of kidney failure, diabetics, cancer and hypertension.
The Director, Public Affairs, NAFDAC, Abubakar Jimoh, disclosed this to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, at the weekend.
He said with the high rate of drug abuse in Nigeria, the country was sitting on a keg of gunpowder.
He said it was shocking that Nigeria was leading even beyond the international coverage of drug abuse globally which was put at five percent, but lamented that the country currently had 15 percent drug abuse rate.
Jimoh said the agency had an average conservative estimate of about 15 million Nigerians who were on drugs and three million of them could be conveniently called drug addicts.
He said this had made the NAFDAC to conclude that the level of drug abuse had led to the high level of violence, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery and even dangerous driving.
He said the agency was controlling chemicals imported by petrol-chemical industries.
