
A high-level delegation from the Nigeria Customs Liaison Office in Cotonou, Benin Republic, paid a courtesy visit to Comptroller Joseph Adelaja, the Customs Area Controller of the Oyo/Osun Area Command, to reinforce cross-border cooperation and enhance bilateral relations. The visit, which took place on Tuesday, was led by Chief Superintendent of Customs (CSC) O.M. Olanrewaju, according to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, AbdulMalik Akintola, on Wednesday in Ibadan.
During the meeting, Comptroller Adelaja underscored the importance of the Liaison Office in fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and Benin Republic. He emphasized that the visit aligns with the strategic vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, which prioritizes collaboration, consolidation, and innovation. Adelaja assured the delegation of the Command’s unwavering support in facilitating their operations and urged them to enhance intelligence-sharing efforts to combat smuggling and other illicit activities effectively.

Adelaja further highlighted the critical role of such partnerships in addressing smuggling challenges at border stations under the Command’s jurisdiction. He expressed optimism that the collaboration would yield significant results in securing the borders and promoting legitimate trade.
In his response, CSC Olanrewaju expressed gratitude for the warm reception extended to his team at the Command’s Operational Headquarters. He explained that the purpose of the visit was to familiarize themselves with the Oyo/Osun Area Command and its border stations. Olanrewaju outlined the core functions of the Nigeria Customs Liaison Office, which include fostering cooperation between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Republic of Benin Customs, facilitating trade between the two nations, organizing bilateral meetings, and enhancing intelligence gathering and sharing at border areas.
Olanrewaju also noted that his team’s operational responsibilities span key border regions, including Idiroko, Kwara, and Oyo State borders. He reiterated the delegation’s commitment to strengthening collaboration in these strategic areas to ensure seamless trade and improved border security.
The visit marks a significant step in deepening the relationship between the Nigeria Customs Service and its Benin Republic counterpart, with both parties reaffirming their dedication to mutual cooperation and shared goals.
