The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on journalists to uphold professionalism by thoroughly fact-checking political information as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections. This resolution was part of a communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The congress, presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola, deliberated on a range of critical matters affecting journalism, governance, and community development.
The union expressed deep condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde, the people of Ibadan, and the royal family over the demise of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I). It offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul.
In the same vein, the congress lauded the unique and well-structured ascendancy system of the Olubadan stool, noting that it eliminates power struggles and ensures continuity. It commended the peaceful reign of the late Olubadan and urged the incoming monarch, Oba (Senator) Rashidi Ladoja, to consolidate on the existing harmony within the Ibadan Obas-in-Council and across Ibadanland.
The NUJ also applauded the Oyo State Government for its ongoing infrastructural strides, particularly the Ibadan Circular Road project and other road constructions statewide, citing them as pivotal to economic development and ease of mobility.
On internal union affairs, the congress encouraged members to regularize their membership at both state and national levels in preparation for the forthcoming Oyo NUJ Council elections, emphasizing the importance of eligibility and active participation in union democracy.
The communiqué was signed by the drafting committee comprising Comrade Abiodun Atilola (Chairman), Comrade Mosunmola Akinola (Secretary), and Comrade Dayo Adu (Member), and was formally released by NUJ Secretary, Olusola Oladapo.
