Olabode Olawuyi, the Assistant Chief Veterinary Technologist who tragically lost his life after being attacked by a lion at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Zoological Garden, has been laid to rest.
The funeral service was held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ile-Ife, before Olawuyi was buried at the OAU Cemetery on Wednesday. Attendees included his wife, children, family members, and university staff.
During the funeral service, Pastor Olu Okotoni delivered a sermon emphasizing the inevitability of death and the importance of preparing for one’s last day on earth. He mentioned that Olawuyi’s death came unexpectedly, but reminded everyone that human beings are appointed to die once and then face judgment. The pastor also highlighted Olawuyi’s brave act of sacrificing his life to save a junior staff member who was initially attacked by the lion.
“We believe we will see him again on the glorious day,” Pastor Okotoni declared. “He was a born-again Christian until his last breath, and he lived a fulfilled life.”
It was earlier reported that Olawuyi was killed by a nine-year-old lion on February 19 while attempting to rescue a woman who had been attacked. Following the tragic incident, the male lion was euthanized. Olawuyi had been in charge of the OAU Zoological Garden for over a decade, showcasing his dedication and passion for his work.
The loss of Olabode Olawuyi has left a deep impact on both his family and the university community. As they bid farewell to their beloved colleague, friend, and family member, they remember him for his selfless act and Christian faith, finding solace in the hope of seeing him again in the afterlife.
