A national leader of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Comrade Adesina Akinpelu, has criticised the Ogun State Government’s order for the demolition of properties belonging to former governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
Daniel, in a statement issued through his media aide, Steve Oliyide, on Saturday, accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of allegedly targeting his Sagamu private residence, The Asoludero Court, Conference Hotels Limited, and the hotel annexe in Sagamu for demolition. He described the move as “condemnable” and “a clear case of political persecution.”
The Ogun State Government, however, denied any political motivation, with Governor Abiodun’s spokesman, Kayode Akinmade, advising Daniel to stop “crying foul” and comply with lawful directives.
Speaking in a telephone interview with journalists on Sunday, Akinpelu alleged that the planned demolition appeared politically driven. He argued that as a two-term former governor and an engineer, Daniel would not have built any property without following due process.
According to him, the state government should have sought a court order before proceeding with demolition, rather than relying on an executive directive.
The OPC leader called on traditional rulers in Ijebuland and across Ogun State to intervene and prevent the dispute between the two political leaders from escalating into a major political crisis.
He warned against a repeat of the historical feud between the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Ladoke Akintola, which deeply divided the old Western Region.
Akinpelu also stressed that Daniel maintains cordial relations with many Yoruba self-determination groups and activists, urging all parties to embrace dialogue over confrontation.
