The Acting Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the family of late Mr. Ojo Peter, an online media journalist who was killed by suspected armed robbers in Ibadan.
Barr. Lawal, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade; Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Hon. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola; and leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State chapter, described the incident as tragic and deeply painful.
During the visit to the journalist’s widow and children, the Acting Governor expressed the government’s sympathy and assured that necessary support would be extended to the bereaved family.
“At this juncture, I have to pray that the Lord will comfort and be with you,” Lawal said. “Ojo Peter was a professional who left us at his prime, and he had the prospect to achieve even greater things in life. As a government, we know the efforts he put into his work when he was alive and we appreciate that.”
He further urged members of the press in Oyo State to rally around the family of their late colleague, noting that solidarity and support would help them recover from the grief.
“Whatever support that can be offered would be looked into, and we will get back to the family. I also want to challenge all journalists here today to help this family come out of grief quickly, and the way to do that is to stand by them,” the Acting Governor added.
The visit highlighted the government’s commitment to standing with the media community in times of loss, while reinforcing calls for stronger measures to protect journalists in the line of duty.
