Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, the Federal Character Commissioner representing Oyo State, has extended heartfelt condolences following the passing of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, who died on the morning of Monday, July 7, 2025, aged 90 .
In a statement released shortly after the monarch’s demise, Prof. Olowofela described the late Olubadan as a beacon of integrity, wisdom, and dedication to Ibadan’s progress. He expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved Olakulehin royal household, the Olubadan‑in‑Council, and all the people of Ibadanland, highlighting the monarch’s prolific service both as a public servant and traditional leader.
The former Commissioner for Education writes: “The death of Oba Olakulehin is a great loss not only for Ibadanland but for all of Oyo State. He led with dignity and remained committed to the heritage and unity of our ancient city,” Prof. Olowofela stated, calling on all citizens to remember the monarch’s legacies and uphold the values he championed.
Concurrently, Prof. Olowofela congratulated High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan and former governor of Oyo State, who is next-in-line under the Egbe Agba (civil)‑line rotational system . Ladoja, born September 25, 1944, is expected to ascend the throne in the coming days in accordance with tradition.
In his message, Prof. Olowofela emphasized unity and continuity: “As we bid farewell to Oba Olakulehin, we also prepare to welcome Oba‑elect Rashidi Ladoja. His track record of statesmanship and love for Ibadanland will serve him well. I pray for a smooth transition and a reign marked by peace and development.”
Oba Olakulehin ascended as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, a culmination of decades climbing the Balogun (military) line and served until his passing on July 7, 2025 . Under the rotational system alternating from Balogun to Egbe Agba lines, the Otun Olubadan, currently High Chief Ladoja, is set to assume the throne next .
High Chief Ladoja, an engineer-turned-politician, served as governor of Oyo State and later received a ceremonial beaded crown as Otun Olubadan in August 2024.
