Oyo Govt Issues Two-Week Ultimatum to Roadside Traders, Container Owners on Airport Road, Onipepeye

The Oyo State Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to roadside traders and container shop owners operating along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye areas of Ibadan to vacate the locations and relocate their businesses to designated markets.

According to the directive, the ultimatum, which takes effect immediately, will expire on Monday, October 27, 2025. The government stated that it would no longer tolerate street trading or the placement of container shops on drainage channels and walkways, noting that several standard markets and enclosed spaces have been provided across the city to accommodate legitimate traders.

A government spokesperson explained that the decision was taken to safeguard lives and properties, emphasizing that roadside trading exposes traders and residents to serious dangers, including vehicular accidents, environmental hazards, and flooding.

The statement further noted that trading activities on walkways and drainages often lead to the destruction of public infrastructure and blockages that hinder free water flow, thereby increasing the risk of flooding during the rainy season.

In addition, the government expressed concern that unregulated roadside trading undermines the state’s investment in tourism development, describing such activities as unsightly and capable of discouraging visitors.

“All affected traders are hereby advised to comply with the relocation directive. Failure to do so will attract enforcement actions in line with existing state laws, which may include confiscation of goods and prosecution of offenders,” the statement read.

The government urged full cooperation from residents and business owners to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment across Ibadan and the entire state.
