The former Deputy Governor of Oyo State and Chieftain of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi has called on President Mohammadu Buhari to rescue Oyo indigenes and other Nigerians in Ukraine.
Gbolarumi gave the charge following the invasion of troops from neighbouring Russia which has caused chaos in Ukraine.
In a press statement personally signed by him, Gbolarumi reacted to plight of Oyo State citizens in Ukraine and Russia, calling on Nigerian government to be proactive.
The lawyer cum politician chides Nigerian government for issuing an advisory to its citizens in Ukraine to take self-defense instead of necessary action to rescue them from their present plight.
“How can the embassy tell Nigerian nationals resident in Ukraine to be responsible for their personal security and safety when other countries are taking responsive action to rescue their citizens from the restive nation?”, Gbolarumi queried.
Russia has come down increasing attacks from Western allies including the United States and Britain after declaring its recognition for two separatist republics in Ukraine.
However, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli, has said in Abuja on Thursday that the government would facilitate the evacuation of Nigerians willing to return home when the Ukrainian authorities reopen the country’s airports.
