A tragic incident has struck the University of Lagos community as Damilola Balogun, a newly elected president of the Nigerian University Education Students Association (NUESA), drowned while celebrating his victory.
Balogun and some of his colleagues had visited Eleko Beach on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, to mark the handover of leadership from the outgoing executive to the new administration headed by him.
Eyewitnesses said the celebration turned tragic when Balogun, who had asked a friend to record him performing a backflip, was suddenly swept away by a powerful wave. Efforts by his friends and other beachgoers to rescue him failed.
A search party was immediately launched, but he remained missing until about 48 hours later, when his lifeless body was discovered floating at Eleko Beach.
Reports revealed that Balogun had barely spent 24 hours in office as NUESA president before his untimely death.
