Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged protesters to remain calm and work towards resolving the economic challenges facing Nigeria.
Makinde expressed his support for the demonstrations against hardship and hunger in the country, but stressed the importance of peaceful and constructive protests.
Speaking to members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Ibadan, he called on Nigerians to unite and address the problems they are currently facing.
Makinde compared the situation to the structural adjustment programme in 1989, acknowledging the difficulties that come with reforms.
He also refuted claims that states have done nothing to alleviate the hardship, highlighting his government’s payment of wage awards to workers and pensioners since October 2023.
The governor assured the protesters that he would relay their message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and requested their cooperation in finding a solution.
