A woman identified as Mrs. Rssheed, “Iya Ibeji” on Friday committed suicide by hanging herself at Adeosun street at Awotan, Apete area of Ibadan.
A close associate of the deceased who pleaded anonymity disclosed that the woman was said to killed herself because she stood as a guarantor to her friend who ran away after securing a loan from a microfinance bank otherwise known as LAPO loan.
The associate added that the deceased friend is to pay the loan, a sum of 17,000 naira, a weekly instalment payment but flee when she couldn’t afford the continual payment of the loan.
Sources added that the loan “caused Mrs Rasheed anxiety and she seemed unable to bear the problem any longer, especially when officials of the micro-finance bank reportedly called her on Friday to see them in their office.”
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Apete police station led detectives to the scene of the incident, while the family said that there would be need to perform some rituals before the body could be detached from the rope hanging it from the ceiling.
When contacted the state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu, he confirmed the story, saying that preliminary investigation indicated that the woman committed suicide.
