World Water Day: Honoring Micheal Ale’s Transformative Impact on Nigeria’s Water Resources

As the world observes World Water Day on March 22, 2025, stakeholders across Nigeria’s water sector gather to recognize this crucial occasion. Among those deserving celebration is Engr. Micheal Ale, a visionary whose profound contributions to water resource development have reshaped the landscape of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Nigeria and beyond.

Engr. Michael Oludare Ale, an Ekiti-born innovator, has dedicated his career to addressing the challenges of clean water access. His expertise as a development professional, entrepreneur, and sustainability advocate has positioned him as a key figure in global water resource management. As a former Board Member of the World Water Council (WWC) in Paris, France—the highest policymaking body in the global water sector—Engr. Ale has played a significant role in shaping international water policies.

His academic foundation laid the groundwork for his achievements. He holds a B.Sc. in Geology and Mineral Science from the University of Ilorin, a Professional Master’s in Project Development and Implementation from the University of Ibadan, and specialized training in UNIDO COMFAR III (Austria, 2010). He is currently advancing his knowledge with an M.Sc. in Hydro-Engineering Geology at the University of Ibadan.

As the Founder and CEO of the Global Initiative for Nigeria Development (GIND), Engr. Ale has spearheaded transformative WASH projects that have significantly impacted communities. His expertise in project auditing, monitoring, and evaluation has resulted in innovative, sustainable solutions. One of his notable contributions is the Project Outcome Validation Aggregator (POVA), a framework designed to improve project quality and sustainability. He has successfully led WASH initiatives for UNICEF and various state governments, ensuring compliance with global best practices.

Beyond technical advancements, Engr. Ale has played a crucial role in revolutionizing Nigeria’s borehole drilling industry. As the Founding President of the Association of Waterwell Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP), he has championed best practices and regulatory improvements that have enhanced industry standards. Additionally, his leadership as President of the Association of Project Development Practitioners (APRODEP) has contributed to refining project development methodologies in Nigeria.

His influence extends globally, as he has represented Nigeria at major international conferences, including the World Bank/IFC Annual Meetings, World Water Forums, and UNEP SAICM Meetings. His contributions to the Nigerian Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) have helped shape the country’s post-Millennium Development Goals (MDG) strategies, ensuring that sustainable development remains a national priority.

Engr. Ale is also a prolific researcher, with publications on groundwater quality, urban flood control, and WASH infrastructure evaluation. His data-driven insights have informed policy-making and improved water management strategies across Nigeria. He has conducted extensive audits of water infrastructure, offering solutions that promote long-term sustainability.

His commitment to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship is equally noteworthy. Through his Male Knowledge Academy, he provides mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and leadership training to young professionals. His dedication to nurturing the next generation of sustainable development leaders ensures that his impact will continue for years to come.

Recognized for his groundbreaking work, Engr. Ale has received numerous accolades, including the Award Fellow for Innovation and Technology at the TED Global Conference in Tanzania. His professional affiliations further underscore his influence, as an Executive Member of APRODEP and AWDROP, and a member of the Nigeria Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS), Nigeria Association of Hydro-Geologists (NAH), and Nigeria Association of Evaluators (NAE).
