Fire Destroys Three Shops in Ibadan After Overnight Electrical Spark

At least three shops were destroyed in a fire that broke out early Friday morning in the Sango area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

The blaze, which started around 4:30 a.m. behind the Fart Oil filling station, was reportedly triggered by an electrical spark from a plugged-in freezer that ignited nearby flammable materials.

According to findings by City Round, three out of ten prefabricated shops were completely gutted before fire service officials arrived. Although no casualties were reported, goods including freezers, beverages, and other valuable items worth millions of naira were lost to the fire.

Confirming the incident, the State General Manager of the Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, said the emergency was reported at 4:41 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, by CSP Adesina. Firefighters, led by ACFS Adedeji (Mrs), were immediately dispatched to the scene.

“On arrival, three shops were found to be fully engulfed in flames. Our team acted swiftly and prevented the fire from spreading to the remaining shops. The fire was eventually extinguished,” Akinyinka stated.

He added that preliminary investigations identified the cause as an electrical spark from an unattended freezer left plugged in overnight. While three shops were damaged, the quick response of the fire service saved nearby properties valued at millions of naira.
