In an exclusive interview with The Punch, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, widely recognized for his lively dance moves and charismatic personality, opened up about his administration, personal life, and his bond with his internationally acclaimed nephew, music star Davido.
The Origin of His Love for Dance
Adeleke shared a fascinating story about how his passion for dancing began. “This is a true story—my mother once told me that when she was pregnant with me, I would move every time she heard music, especially praise and worship. But as soon as the music stopped, I would become still. She always found it unusual and wondered what kind of child I would be,” he recounted.
As he grew older and ventured into the workforce, he realized that music enhanced his productivity. Over time, dancing became an inseparable part of his life.
Dancing and Politics
Reflecting on his political journey, Adeleke recalled how his opponents once attempted to use his love for dancing against him when he was elected as a senator. However, instead of hindering his career, it only amplified his popularity, particularly on social media. He believes that God turned the situation in his favor, as more people began to admire and appreciate him.
Despite family members advising him to slow down, he remained firm in his decision to continue dancing. According to him, his joy and energy were infectious, bringing happiness to many.
Influencing Other Leaders
Adeleke emphasized that his passion for dancing had helped change perceptions about leadership. “I have shown other governors that dancing does not diminish their status, respect, or credibility. Leaders are human too, and having a hobby doesn’t affect their ability to govern,” he said.
To support his point, he referenced former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who played the saxophone during his tenure, yet remained an effective leader. Adeleke proudly noted that his enthusiasm had inspired other governors to embrace dancing, proving that leadership could be both effective and engaging.
Governance and Achievements
Despite inheriting a difficult situation in Osun State, Adeleke asserted that his administration had made significant progress in just two years. He credited his team for their dedication and efforts in achieving positive results.
“Dancing doesn’t interfere with my work as governor. My administration has accomplished a lot, and I am proud of the progress we have made,” he stated.
Through his leadership, Adeleke continues to break stereotypes, showing that joy and governance can go hand in hand.
