The Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON) has harped on the need to use dance to achieve mental health, adding that dance , as a therapeutic tool is crucial to mental health and wellness among others.
President, Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (AFSPON), Professor (Mrs.) Mariam Asabe Iyeh (fsonta, fAdspon), made the remarks in a special message to herald the celebration of World Mental Health Day, October 10..
In her message, tagged, Dancing Towards Mental Wellness, which was made available to newsmen on Thursday, she said: “To our dear fellow Nigerians. As we commemorate World Mental Health Day today, October 10th, the Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON) joins the global community in raising awareness about the importance of mental health and well-being.
Mental health is a fundamental human right, and we must prioritize it in our daily lives. As a nation, we’ve faced numerous challenges, and we must support each other in maintaining our mental well-being.”
Stressing on the the Power of Dance, Professor lyeh said: “Dance has been an integral part of Nigerian culture, providing a platform for expression, storytelling, and healing. Research shows that dance can significantly improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. It promotes self-esteem, confidence, and social connections – essential elements for overall well-being.”
Assuring that the association is committed to promoting mental health awareness through dance, she added that: “At ADSPON, we are committed to promoting mental health awareness through dance. We’ll continue to organize workshops, performances, and community outreach programmes that showcase the therapeutic benefits of dance.
Mental health is a fundamental pillar of human wellbeing, productivity, and social stability. At ADSPON, we recognize that the mind and body are interconnected, and through dance and creative expression, individuals can find pathways to healing, resilience, and emotional balance.
As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, we urge all Nigerians to prioritize their mental health. Let’s break the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage each other to seek help when needed.
