The media industry in Oyo State has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Ojo Peters, publisher of Daily Monitor Online blog and media aide to spiritual leader Maharaj Ji, who was killed in a broad daylight robbery attack at Oke-Ado, Ibadan South-West Local Government Area, on August 18, 2025.
According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Peters was attacked by armed robbers shortly after leaving a bank. His widow, Mrs. Olubunmi Peters, recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that her husband had withdrawn money around 2 p.m. and hurriedly boarded a motorcycle to keep an appointment at Molete.
She narrated that moments after he left the bank, a gang of armed robbers intercepted him and snatched the cross bag he was carrying. One of the assailants threw the bag to an accomplice waiting on another motorcycle. Peters attempted to flee, but one of the robbers opened fire, shooting him three times in the stomach in full view of bystanders.
“The armed robber collected the bag and threw it to the other one on the bike. Ojo tried to run away from the scene, but the robber released bullets and shot him three times in the stomach,” the widow painfully recalled.
The attack left Peters helpless on the ground before he succumbed to his injuries. His wife described the ordeal as a devastating blow to the family, cutting short the life of a man committed to his profession and community service.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Command said investigations were launched immediately. One suspect was arrested while another was killed in a confrontation with police operatives around the Nigerian Tribune House, Imalefalafia, Ibadan.
Mrs. Peters lamented that her husband’s death was not only a personal tragedy but also a huge loss to the journalism community in Oyo State.
